Die-hard recyclers and second-hand aficionados are regulars at our Ivy MUC Encore Shop– a treasure trove of goods. But for those of you who may not be familiar, we thought we should highlight this program and some of the interesting items we’ve seen come and go over the years!
From candle-holders to couches, from bikes to boats, from patio furniture to paintings and everything in between, the Encore Shop has a revolving inventory of used goods located at our Ivy MUC (formerly Ivy landfill) location for sale at reasonable prices. For the past two years, County and City residents have donate and purchased items “in perfectly good shape,” as many of our mothers and fathers like to say. Participation in the program not only saves on landfill space and waste, but also helps RSWA earn revenue to help us offset operational costs.
People from all walks of life patronize the shop: some have fallen into tough financial circumstances; others are money-savvy bargain shoppers; others are artists; and some have even built a business out of refurbishing old “stuff.” Jonah is a regular who makes beautiful home décor from old tables, ladders, and doors.
The Encore Shop has also gathered its share of recycling lore over the years.
Once a relative brought a painting from his deceased mother that turned out to be worth $1,000! One time someone brought it a boat to sell. Another brought a brand new set of fancy alloy rims and they were sold within 5 minutes for $25! When I visited last week, there was a new HP scanner complete with the factory stickers on it.
So the next time you want to throw something away, we hope you’ll take an extra five minutes before you head to the tipping floor at Ivy MUC transfer station and “transfer” some of those still-valuable items to the Encore Shop.
It not only helps our organization, but it helps our community repurpose.
