2018-2019 “Christmas Tree Recycling Program” Information

2-6-19: Free mulch now available at Darden Towe Park

Free mulch is now available at Darden Towe Park, while the supply lasts. Bring a shovel and help yourself. The park is open 7 am until dark each day.

The Christmas Tree recycling program is run by the Albemarle County Parks and Rec Department.

This is a program that recycles discarded Christmas Trees that are chipped into mulch and offered to the public for free. The County Parks’ program has been in operation since 1988 and has collected an average of 2300 trees annually that yield over 110 cubic yards of chips. Combining forces with the City of Charlottesville’s Curbside Pick-Up, the joint programs collected 4100 trees yielding 200 cubic yards of chips in 2018. Please note this is reducing the impact on our landfill and helping citizens find a place to dispose of a large and cumbersome item.

Shortly after the Curbside Pick-up, the City and County Parks Crews will join forces and chip and estimated 2200 trees at Darden Towe Park. Free mulch from the recycled trees will be available starting February 1, 2019 at Darden Towe Park.

Pickup program details: Both programs require that decorations, stands and nails be removed. Please no other “yard waste”.
