Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority
Environmental Management System

General Information

Environmental Management System The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authorities' (RWSA) Departments are committed to environmental improvement. In 2003, RWSA began the development of an Environmental Management System (EMS), winning an EPA EMS leadership program assistantship during this process. This was the third EMS leadership program EPA has sponsored for local governments, and 23 past participants across the United States have now developed effective Environmental Management Systems through this program. Many other local municipalities and corporations in Virginia, across the U.S., and around the world have developed or are currently developing EMS as well. During the January 26, 2009 Executive Board meeting the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority was recognized by Amy Owens, Regional Director of Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Valley Office for their recent E3 acceptance into the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP). The presentation was given to the Observatory Water Treatment Plant. The RWSA has committed to environmental stewardship and will continue their efforts to protect the Charlottesville-Albemarle environment.

RWSA has applied for and received acceptance into the Virginia Environmental Excellence Programs (VEEP) with three facilities, Moores Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Observatory and South Rivanna Water Treatment Plants. This dedication to protect the environment by the employees of the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authorities stands as a testament to their commitment to not only the Commonwealth of Virginia but to the residents of the Charlottesville-Albemarle area.
