South Fork Rivanna Reservoir Dredging Feasibility Study

What is the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir?

The South Fork Rivanna Reservoir is a lake or reservoir located on the South Fork Rivanna River about four miles north of Charlottesville. The reservoir is created by a dam built in the 1960s; the dam is located just west of where U S Highway 29 crosses the South Fork Rivanna River. The reservoir provides water supply for the City of Charlottesville and the urban area of Albemarle County through treatment at the South Fork Rivanna Water Treatment Plant operated by the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority.

About the Project

The Dredging Feasibility Study is an engineering study to address the feasibility of dredging sediment that has accumulated within the Reservoir since it was placed into operation over 40 years ago. The study follows the recommendations made by a citizen Task Force in January 2009, and will obtain various types of useful survey information, to include current contours of the reservoir, sampling of the sediment for composition, and an evaluation of impediments within the original profile that may limit the effective ability to remove sediment. The study will also address what to do with the sediment at the time it is removed from the Reservoir, including what processing is required and where to perform it, and where to store the material. It is anticipated that the volume of sediment could be as high as one million cubic yards or greater (a cube three foot high, three foot wide, and three foot deep is one cubic yard), so the question of processing after dredging can become complex.

The completed study will provide an estimated volume of the sediment that can be removed and an estimate of the cost of such removal, including the further processing that would be required after dredging.

A Request for Proposals was issued by the Authority in May 2009 and eight engineering firmed submitted proposals on June 17, 2009. A Selection Committee was also formed in June to review the proposals and make a recommendation on the hiring of a firm to the Authority's Board of Directors. A decision on the hiring of a firm is tentatively scheduled for September 2009. Completion of the study is anticipated by Spring 2010.

The first meeting of the Selection Committee has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 3:00 pm in Room A of the Albemarle County Office Building - 5th Street, located at 1600 Fifth Street SW (note this building is one-half mile south of the Fifth Street Interchange with I-64, not the main office building on McIntire Road). The meeting is open to the public to observe.

Persons interested in reviewing the proposals that were received on June 17 may contact 434-977-2970, Extension 101 or info@rivanna.org.
