Rivanna Pump Station Bypass Pumping System Update

The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) is reporting that a 50 million gallon per day (mgd) wastewater bypass pumping and piping system has been completed at the Moores Creek Advanced Water Resource Recovery Facility. This bypass pumping system conveys wastewater around the damaged pump station to complete the normal treatment process. The temporary pumping and piping system will allow RWSA to manage higher wastewater flows the facility may receive during storm events. The Rivanna Pump Station was damaged during a storm on January 9, 2024. A temporary 10 mgd pumping and piping system had been conveying wastewater around the damaged pumping station to complete the normal treatment process. RWSA staff and our contractors are continuing to review the events that led to the failure of the pump station. Restoration of the pump station will begin in the next several weeks and last for several months. Progress updates on the Rivanna Pump Station can be found on our website at https://www.rivanna.org/mcawrrf-rivanna-pump-station/.
